skill fiction has inspired curiosity and enthusiasm in generations of children. how can science bloggers draw on sf’s power to entertain and bring up? what area can we find in fiction beyond the shabby multi-page calculations of rocket trajectories? what does the practice of branch look liking in sf? in the past, scientists like asimov and clarke were the ones handwriting sf. who’s producing the good goods these days, and what makes a good bad example? many modern sf writers blog too. what opportunities exist for cross-promotion and educating the writers? and which bloggers are already doing it all right? read the comments on this post…
Related posts: Amazon, Meyer lansky, Bridge school

Obama’s Strong Latino Support Key In Western States

As Barack Obama (D) hits the campaign trail this weekend in western states like Nevada, Colorado and New Mexico, it’s a reminder of the importance that Latino voters will play in this election. Despite losing Latino support to Hillary Clinton (D) during the Democratic primary, Latino voters are overwhelmingly supporting Obama over John McCain (R). Their support will undoubtedly be key to Obama winning those western states:

Matthew lillard

The William C. Velasquez Institute, a nonpartisan public policy center in Los Angeles, analyzed polling data from the three Western states and Florida. It found that Latino voters provided no advantage to either side in Florida despite long-standing support for the Republican Party by Cuban Americans. In the Western states, the Latino vote is growing in size and as a percentage of the total, and it is favoring the Democratic Party more than in previous years.Latinos make up 32.4% of registered voters in New Mexico, 11.4% in Nevada and 9.9% in Colorado. The institute examined data from eight polling firms and found that Obama’s lead over McCain in Nevada would be 42.4% to 40.7% without Latino voters — a difference that’s within the margin of error. Include Latino voters, however, and Obama’s lead grows to 50%, versus 43% for McCain. That only tells part of the story, according to Antonio Gonzalez, president of the institute. In the last presidential election, 60% of Latinos in Nevada voted for Democratic candidate John F. Kerry and 40% for Bush. This time, polls show a 7- to 10-point increase for Obama.”Two things are happening: The Latino vote is growing, and there’s a bigger margin of support for Obama,” Gonzalez said. “The Latino vote has been important in New Mexico for a long time, and it continues to grow, but in Nevada and Colorado, this is new.”In New Mexico, McCain has a 4-point lead without Latino voters, and Obama has an 8-point lead with the Latino vote. And in Colorado, a statistical tie without Latinos jumps to 51% for Obama versus 45% for McCain when Latinos are included.

As the New York Times reported last week, McCain has lost significant Hispanic support to Obama:

In the early days of the presidential campaign, Senator John McCain seemed to be in a good position to win support among Hispanic voters. He had sponsored legislation for comprehensive immigration overhaul in Congress, made a point of speaking warmly about the contributions of immigrants and was popular among Latinos in Arizona, his home state, which borders three battleground states here in the Southwest: New Mexico, Colorado and Nevada.

But less than two weeks before Election Day, those advantages appear to have evaporated. Recent Gallup polls show Mr. McCain running far behind Senator Barack Obama among Hispanic voters nationwide, only 26 percent of whom favor the Republican. The possibility that Mr. McCain can duplicate George W. Bush’s performance among Latinos in 2004, when Republicans won 44 percent of the vote, now seems remote.

The International Criminal Court’s (ICC) chief prosecutor has told the BBC he will continue to push for Sudan’s leader to be charged with war crimes.

Luis Moreno Ocampo said there was strong evidence that President Omar al-Bashir was behind attacks on civilians in Darfur province.

The Sudanese government has rejected the allegations, saying the ICC’s case threatens peace efforts in Darfur.

A number of countries want the UN to block the attempt to indict Mr Bashir.

“We found evidence that al-Bashir himself was controlling the attacks on these people who normally live in Darfur,” Mr Ocampo told the BBC’s Arabic Service.

He said local people had been raped and killed by both the Sudanese army and Janjaweed pro-government militias.

Mr Ocampo said the attacks were continuing and that he could not ignore the alleged crimes.

He is to put his case before a ICC judges next week. In July, he asked the judges to issue an arrest warrant for Mr Bashir.

African indictments

Opponents of the investigation argue that it is hindering efforts to establish peace in Darfur.

The African Union and the Arab League have said the investigation should be dropped.

Big spring jam

African Union Chairman Jean Ping told the BBC it was unfair that all those indicted by the ICC so far were African.

“We are not against international justice,” he said.

“It seems that Africa has become a laboratory to test the new international law.”

But some Western countries, such as the US and the UK, say Mr Bashir’s government has backed militias accused of committing widespread atrocities in Darfur.

Up to 300,000 people have been killed and more than two million have been forced from their homes in Darfur since a rebellion began in 2003.

The International Criminal Court is expected to rule on how to proceed before the end of this year.

It can refuse to prosecute the case if it believes that doing so would be a threat to peace and security.

The African Union has already asked the UN Security Council to put a block on the case.

Matthew Filipowicz: White House Takes Water to the Extreme!

As the story broke that George W. Bush’s Environmental Protection Agency will not limit the amount of rocket fuel in our nation’s drinking water, it looked like it was just another example of Republicans against regulation.

But with the nation’s economy in ruins, the Bush Administration has come up with a new plan to turn the story to their advantage. A plan that helps boost the economy, while simultaneously funneling money into our infrastructure and promoting the general health of our nation’s populace. They even made a video to promote their new program.

Take a look.

The move is nothing short of brilliant. And to think it all started with George W. Bush’s EPA refusing to to do it’s job and regulate chemical pollution from rocket fuel? I mean, it’s just rocket fuel. Who wouldn’t want some in their drinking water? And everybody’s drinking it. Well, technically, not everybody. But, according to the AP, it was found in

at least 395 sites in 35 states at levels high enough to interfere with thyroid function and pose developmental health risks, principally in the direction of babies and fetuses.

Seriously, this works out great for Republicans. They get to keep their polluters happy, and at the same time, they get to reach out to that much desired “youth” market. Who doesn’t love those flavored water energy drinks? I mean, I don’t, but, other than me?

And it’ll get people to drink more water. So what if the water is polluted with dangerously high levels of perchlorate? You get to live on the “extreme,” as the kids like to say.
