Even his most ardent critic had to feel a twinge of pity when director McG (Charlie’s Angels) announced he was developing an American remake of the BBC cult comedy, Spaced. Following the success of The Office redo on NBC, you have to figure McG was merely looking to cash in on some of that Brit TV shine.

But, the outrage that rolled McG’s way from devoted Spaced fans on both sides of the Atlantic (and, perhaps more importantly, from within Hollywood circles) hit him so hard that he backed off the project and reportedly abandoned plans to repackage the U.K. original.

Good move. Spaced wouldn’t work on American TV. It’s a uniquely British phenomena — a rare mix of quick-witted verbal comedy, grounded/modern characterization and surreal moments of fantastical introspection that pushed the world of two struggling wannabes toward unlimited comedic possibilities in every episode. Such a show would prove too difficult for your average network programming executive to slot in on any nightly line-up.

Written by and starring Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes, Spaced ran for only 14 episodes over three seasons. (That’s like 110 episodes in American TV years.) Directed by Edgar Wright, the comedy served as the entry point onto the industry for the team behind Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.

The first comprehensive DVD set of the production hits North America on July 22. To celebrate the arrival, BBC America will air six back-to-back episodes chosen as favorites by Pegg, Hynes and Wright — airing this Sunday, July 20.

But, the Spaced crew will only be getting warmed up as Pegg, Hynes and Wright will head out on a weeklong, four city tour to publicize the DVD release. The trio will hit New York, Los Angeles, San Diego’s Comic-Con and Austin for special screenings, panel sessions and signings.
