Steve Parker: You said WHO is a top exec at Cerberus/Chrysler?!?!

The Detroit News reports that Cerberus Capital Management has been mum about its talks with General Motors and Renault-Nissan about a possible merger scenario with Chrysler. But no one needs to fear what might happen between one or two or even all of the Detroit Three, and perhaps some of their overseas friends, as well. One of America’s best-known and most-loved public servants is “on the case.” Read on and understand.

(no one knows yet where chrysler wish land and in what condition; the company says they have disparate solid offers payment their dodge viper division, and we dream indian car-maker tata is probably one of those bidders).

Looking for some comment from Cerberus on the current crisis, three reporters actually chased Cerberus Chairman and former Treasury Secretary John Snow down a Capitol Hill hallway after a congressional hearing, only to be rebuffed.

So who finally broke the ice with at least some public comment?

Former Vice President Dan Quayle, who is chairman viagra kaufen ohne rezept of Cerberus Global Investments, an international unit of Cerberus. Quayle told a group in Phoenix this week that the company would hold out for a good deal involving Chrysler. That’s right, the ex-VP and ex-US Senator, whose own sister told the media that while at college, her brother Dan’s favorite period was “lunch,” is right where he’s supposed to be, on the team making the huge decisions about the future of the US automotive industry.

2008-10-25-danquayle.jpg

“The analysts are looking at it,” Quayle said, according to the Phoenix Business Journal. “We’re not going to do the deal unless it’s a positive for our investors. We don’t buy companies based on growth stories. We do not price our companies that way. … We’re opportunity investors.” Now, isn’t that about the single most patriotic take on the crisis we’ve read?

Whew! For a minute there, I thought Cerberus might really be in trouble, might really be in over their heads with their purchase of Chrysler from Daimler. But, now that we know Dan Quayle is on the front lines, I’m sure that you, like me, can sleep a little sounder this evening.

Now we need to find out for you if there’s any truth to the rumor that Cerberus is recruiting Sarah Palin for their new Alaska investment division.

U.S. stocks join global selloff

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — U.S. stocks added to a worldwide stock selloff Friday on fears of a global recession, but the major indexes bounced off their lows in the first minutes of trading.

The Dow Jones industrial average (INDU) fell 350 points, or 4%, viagra kaufen ohne rezept after being down as much as 504 points in the early going.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 (SPX) index and the Nasdaq composite (COMP) both lost over 4%. All three major gauges were hovering around five-year lows.

Stocks have been mostly lower this week as the credit crisis, sluggish corporate forecasts and slump in commodity prices exacerbated fears of a steeper slowdown. The weakness hasn’t been limited to U.S. stocks, with markets in Asia and Europe tumbling this week as well.

Asian markets tumbled overnight, with the Japanese Nikkei losing almost 10%. The market in Moscow slumped 14% before the exchange suspended trading until Tuesday. European markets slumped in afternoon trading after a big drop in the United Kingdom’s third-quarter GDP added to recession fears there.

Bets that the Bank of England and European Central Bank will have to cut rates aggressively in the months ahead sent the euro and pound lower versus the dollar. The dollar slumped versus the yen.

Oil prices continued to slide, with crude dropping below $65 a barrel despite news that oil cartel OPEC is cutting production by 1.5 million barrels a day starting in November.

Investors had been braced for an even bigger selloff in the early going, after Dow Jones industrial average futures fell 548 points, which triggered trading limits.

That prompted the New York Stock Exchange to post a statement on its blog confirming that trading would began as normal at 9:30 a.m. ET, saying it felt it needed to address widespread rumors that the open would be delayed.

Results: This week has brought the biggest wave yet of corporate results, with about 140 of the S&P 500 companies having reported.

With 34% of the reports out already, third-quarter profits are currently on track to have fallen almost 10.9% from a year earlier, according to the latest estimates from Thomson Reuters.

After the close Thursday, Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500) reported quarterly sales and earnings that topped forecasts. But the software leader also warned that sales and earnings for the fiscal second quarter and the full year won’t meet forecasts due to the slowing economy. (Full story)

Stocks have tumbled over the last year as the financial market meltdown and economic contraction have weighed on equities. Since hitting an all-time high of 14,164 just over a year ago, the Dow has lost about 38%. Since hitting an all-time high of 1,565 at the same time, the S&P 500 has lost around 41%.

Since hitting a bull-market high of 2,859 nearly a year ago, the Nasdaq has crumbled 44%.

Credit market: Lending rates seized up a bit amid the broad recession fears, with Libor, the overnight bank-to-bank lending rate, rising to 1.28% from 1.21% late Thursday, according to Bloomberg.com. However, that still kept the rate below the Fed’s benchmark lending rate of 1.5%, which is a good sign for the credit market. Libor hit a record 6.88% earlier this month at the height of the market panic.

The 3-month Libor rate, what banks charge each other to borrow for three months, fell to 3.52% from 3.54% Thursday.

The TED spread, which is the difference between what banks pay to borrow from each other for three months and what the Treasury pays, widened modestly to 2.56% from 2.55% late Wednesday. The spread hit a record 4.65% earlier this month. The narrower the spread, the more willing banks are to lend to each other.

Obama Adviser: McCain Language “Insulting,” We’ll Use it Too

John McCain said several times during last night’s debate that Barack Obama simply doesn’t understand many of the subjects at the heart of the presidential race. It was quite clear that McCain was trying to paint Obama as naive and risky and he hammered that theme — Obama “doesn’t understand” — again and again through the 90-minute affair.

After the debate, Linda Douglass took great offense on Obama’s behalf, calling the language “insulting.” Then she used it to describe McCain. Here is the exchange with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow.

rachel maddow: â?weâve heard a phrase repeated ad nauseum tonight from senatot mccain â” senator obama didnât understand, that he didnât grasp the issues. whatâs the rejoinder to that from the obama side?â

Linda Douglass: â?I would say that Senator McCain doesnât get it. Heâs demonstrated in every way that heâs completely out of touch. Heâs somebody whoâs giving tax cuts to the wealthy when itâs the middle class who needs tax cuts. He is somebody who doesnât understand that Americans need to be free of their dependence on foreign oil â” heâs talking about just drill, baby, drill. Heâs demonstrated that in so many ways. He thought the fundamentals of the economy were strong. Just last week he thought the fundamentals of the economy were strong. So, he doesnât get it. Thatâs what he has demonstrated. Heâs out of touch. And when you try to use sort of insulting language as he did tonight it doesnât really appeal to voters who are looking for a positive solution to their own lives and the struggles that theyâre going through.â

Satan disciples

Got that? The Obama campaign can say that John McCain “doesn’t get it” but McCain’s language is “insulting” when he says that Obama doesn’t understand.

Douglass will not find herself in any trouble with her boss on these kinds of attacks because he said the same thing in his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention. “It’s not because John McCain doesn’t care. It’s because John McCain doesn’t get it.”

Perhaps the Obama-Biden campaign would be better off accusing McCain of plagiarizing their rhetoric. Then again, maybe not.

A bad night for McCain/Palin

John McCain, Barack Obama and Sarah Palin all had a chance to score some points with a national audience on Thursday night. More often than not, though, McCain and Palin came up badly short, leaving plenty of space for Obama to win the night.

All three were interviewed for network news broadcasts. McCain and Obama each hit all of networks, while CBS News broadcast the second segment of Palin’s interview with Katie Couric.

The Palin-Couric sitdown was memorable for how badly Palin performed. Though Couric didn’t really come at the Republican vice-presidential nominee with any of the potential traps ABC News’ Charlie Gibson did for his interview with her, Palin still managed to come off badly on her own. She fumbled an effort to justify her previous claim that Russia’s proximity to Alaska counts as foreign policy credentials. Palin’s voice shook, and she was once again Miss South Carolina Teen USA.

Though she met with former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger earlier this week, Palin managed to badly misrepresent his position on negotiations with countries like Iran and Syria, despite having met with Kissinger earlier this week. Then, when asked why she didn’t get a passport until last year, Palin responded:

i’m not one of those who maybe came from a background of, you recognize, kids who conceivably graduate college and their parents give them a passport and give them a backpack and say go off and make a trip the world.

No, I’ve worked all my life. In fact, I usually had two jobs all my life until I had kids. I was not a part of, I guess, that culture. The way that I have understood the world is through education, through books, through mediums that have provided me a lot of perspective on the world.

It probably wasn’t a bad answer, politically, but it certainly came off as cynical, calculated to make her look like a normal person under attack from coastal elites.

Meanwhile, on ABC News, McCain was asked whether he’d participate in Friday night’s presidential debate, as scheduled. He responded by trying to shift some blame on to Obama, saying, “I understand that there is a lot of attention on this but I also wish Senator Obama had agreed to ten or more town hall meetings that I had asked him to attend with me. Wouldn’t be quite that much urgency if he agreed to do that, instead he refused to do it.”

NBC’s coverage relied heavily on — CBS. NBC introduced McCain by showing David Letterman’s late-night smackdown. McCain had failed to show for an interview with Letterman scheduled for Wednesday night, and Letterman had mocked him on-air. NBC used a clip of Letterman saying, “This is not the way a tested hero behaves.” McCain then materialized on the screen, standing before a peach colored backdrop, looking shaky and stunned. Anchor Brian Williams opened by noting to McCain that Democrats had called his campaign suspension a stunt, and that the Arizona Senator’s own surrogates had kept attacking Obama during the alleged suspension. “Are you happy with how you played this?” asked Williams.

When Williams tried to play a clip of Obama, the clip malfunctioned, and he had to lean on CBS again. After Williams asked Chuck Todd what it all meant — “Governor Palin has had a very tough ten days,” said Todd — the Obama clip was ready to roll.

What first looked like a problem for Obama turned out to be a blessing. After McCain’s meandering and Palin’s flop sweat, all the Democrat had to do was manage complete sentences. In a blue tie, before a blue backdrop, he looked as calm and assured as he did when debating the dotty Alan Keyes prior to his landslide victory in their 2004 race for the Senate. “It’s amazing how much people can get done,” Obama said, “when folks aren’t interested in taking credit or passing blame.”
