In a move that redefines the term “negative campaign ads,” the McCain camp unveiled new billboard ads that appear to support the killing of liberals in order to help usher the conservative into the White House. Brett Atkins, a campaign worker for Obama in Santa Fe, reacted to the ad by shooting an elderly couple who passed in front of the campaign office in which he was working. The elderly couple had been wearing McCain stickers at the time. After knocking the couple down with one shot to the chest of each of his victims, Atkins stood over the pair and unloaded the 15 round clip of his 9mm Glock 19 directly into the McCain stickers the pair was wearing on their chests.

Barack Obama was quick to distance himself from Atkins, by saying, “Brett has been suspended from the campaign while he deals with issues that stem from abusive conservative parents. It is unfortunate that John McCain’s hateful ads were the spark that triggered this unfortunate event.” Obama then added with a thoughtful grin, “Liberals - 2, Conservatives - 0″

Republicans blast Ameren’s approved hike

Two downstate Republicans came out blasting Ameren CIP’s plan to raise rates on downstate customers with the Illinois Commerce Commission’s approval today — Senate candidate Ken Burzynski and House candidate John Cavaletto.

“Senator Forby’s failed leadership in the Senate allowed the rate freeze to expire and the result is this $163 million rate hike,” Burzynski said. “Instead of fighting to continue the rate freeze, Forby struck a deal with Ameren that let the freeze expire. We need real leadership to address this issue and not more deal cutting with Ameren like Senator Forby did.”

Burzynski’s comments follow a unanimous vote by the Illinois Commerce Commission to grant Ameren CIPS a $163 million increase in delivery charges. The initial impact will be felt as early as next month as residents begin to increase natural gas usage and electric heat usage as the temperature begins to drop.

“Today marks another sad day for Southern Illinois, when the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.” Burzynski said. “This is just another failure of government to protect seniors, families on fixed incomes and small businesses that are struggling with the current economic downturn.”

Burzynski also pledged to work with lawmakers of both parties to examine the role of the Illinois Commerce Commission in dealing with utility rates. “The members of the Illinois Commerce Commission have again failed the citizens of Illinois and in general the people of Southern Illinois in particular,” Burzynski concluded.

While McCain outlined a package of proposals, Obama took a more cautious approach as they both jockeyed for position in the November 4 election.

"I'm much less interested at this point in scoring political points than I am in making sure that we have a structure in place that is sound and is actually going to work," he said.

Democrats ridiculed McCain this week for saying that U.S. economic fundamentals were sound as powerful financial institutions teetered on the brink of collapse.

Obama said McCain was "a little panicked right now" as he tried to deal with the growing economic crisis.

"At this point he seems to be willing to say anything or do anything," he said.

Speaking in Green Bay, Wisconsin, McCain said his plan would restore public confidence in the financial system.

NEW YORK (CNN) — Seven months have passed since the disappearance and slaying of Santa Barbara, California, college student Brianna Denison.

Brianna Denison, 19, disappeared when she was visiting friends at the University of Nevada, Reno.
